Mistake 1: Playing it too loud
The instinct is to turn the volume up until the sound feels “solid,” but sleep audio only needs to be loud enough to mask disruptions. A 2014 Pediatrics study measured 14 infant sound machines and found all of them exceeded recommended nursery levels at maximum volume. You are exposing your ears for roughly eight hours straight, so treat it as a long exposure. Set the level just above the noise you are trying to cover, and move the speaker away from your head, not on the pillow.
Mistake 2: Tracks with sudden events
This is the most common self-sabotage. A “rain and thunderstorm” mix, a nature track with a lone birdcall, or ambient music with section changes all contain the exact thing your sleeping brain watches for: unpredictable events.
